A dramatic meeting for Volkswagen at Aldo Scribante
Volkswagen Motorsport came back smiling despite a dramatic weekend at its home round at the Aldo Scribante National Extreme Festival races in Gqeberha on Saturday.
“Our home round proved dramatic at Aldo Scribante,” Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport explains. “But the lads did everyone who came to watch the races from Volkswagen’s South African headquarters just up the road at Kariega proud, in spite of all three of our drivers facing their own challenges through the weekend.”
Charl Michael Visser delivered the team’s best result of the Aldo Scribante weekend with the second SATC SupaCup victory aboard his SupaPolo. “I love Aldo Scribante and I’m delighted to take home a win on my first official visit here as a Volkswagen Motorsport driver,” Charl Michael admitted. “My first race was tough, but I was second on the grid for heat 2 and made my move into the lead at turn 1 and stayed ahead from there to thrill the Volkswagen people and my Gqeberha race fans with the race win.”
Jonathan Mogotsi had a busy day at Aldo Scribante. “Wow, that was an action packed race meeting!” Jonathan explained. “I qualified well and was happy to bring it home second in the opening heat ahead of our main title challenger. But the second race was a cracker. Charl was driving the widest SupaPolo I have ever seen up front, so I took the gap to get up to second. But it was wild and close and a last turn bumping session dropped me to fifth as I crossed the line far over on the grass. Still, I ended third for the day with a decent points haul, so all good.”
Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie Kyle Visser also had an up and down weekend following a demon start in the opening heat. “Qualifying never went quite as expected but I made a demon start and with a little luck, I was up to third after the first lap,” runaway Polo rookie leader Kyle pointed out. “From there I worked very hard to stay there, so I was delighted with my first Astro Energy Polo Cup podium. Unfortunately I felt ill after all that and the team opted to withdraw me from the second heat. That’s a great pity, but I am very happy with my first race result.”
“Aldo Scribante may have been our home race, but it really tested Volkswagen Motorsport this weekend,” Mike Rowe concluded. “Still, the lads delivered some great results and we now look forward to what promises to be a just as epic second half of the season commencing in East London on Saturday 27 July. See you at the Grand Prix Circuit!”
