Dawie van der Merwe, the champion-elect, will make his final appearance in the GR86 Cup this weekend as the national Extreme Festival concludes at Zwartkops Raceway. Van der Merwe, who has maintained an unbeaten streak throughout the season, is determined to conclude his phenomenal season with a flawless record.

While not officially crowned as the champion just yet, the Mbombela driver has two more races left in the extraordinary season that has seen him dominate the field at every event. He will undoubtedly aim to take the final two wins this weekend. Still, he’ll also aim to improve his qualifying time of 1:13.107, which he recorded at his previous outing at the Pretoria circuit during May.

“It’s just another race weekend for me. That’s how I approach every round. Yes, we will celebrate the championship after, but as usual, we will focus on setting the car up for the weekend and getting the best possible result. The team still has a job, and so do I, so there’s no place for complacency,” said Van der Merwe.

As has become the norm, Van der Merwe will be on the circuit on Friday for three practice sessions before Saturday morning’s Qualifying. Once the grid has been determined, two races will conclude the 2024 season.

Tickets can be purchased at the gates on Saturday or by emailing Zwartkops Raceway (info@zwartkops.co.za) beforehand. The entire race day programme, starting at 10:20, will also be broadcast live on https://extremefestival.co.za/live/.
