The 2024 South African Rotax MAX Challenge got underway at Killarney Kart Circuit this past weekend, where young Centurion driver Adriaan Steyn showcased his skill in the highly competitive Micro MAX class. Despite a tough start in tricky conditions, the former national Bambino Champion battled his way up the order to secure an impressive sixth overall.
Adriaan’s weekend began on a challenging note during Friday’s qualifying session, where he struggled to find pace in the slippery conditions and ended up 12th on the timesheets. However, he quickly set about making amends in Saturday morning’s opening heat, gaining a position to finish 11th.
The second heat saw Adriaan dig deep, fighting his way from 10th on the grid to finish in seventh after a determined drive through the field. It was in the final heat, however, where he truly shone. Adriaan capitalised on the improved conditions as the track dried out to claim his first podium of the 2025 national season, finishing third in a fiercely contested race.
Reflecting on his performance, Adriaan said, “It was a tough start to the weekend, especially with the conditions not being in my favour.” But I kept pushing, and I’m really happy with how we turned things around. Reaching the podium in the final heat was a great way to conclude, and I’m looking forward to building on this result.
With his strong recovery drive, Adriaan leaves Killarney with valuable championship points and a confidence boost as he sets his sights on Round 2 of the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships at Vereeniging Kart Circuit on 5 April 2025.
