It was a successful East London debut for rookie KC Ensor-Smith. The multiple-karting champion arrived at the East London Grand Prix Circuit for the first time since starting in South Africa’s premier single-seater category at the start of 2023.
Competing in the fifth round of the championship, Ensor-Smith entered the weekend in seventh, hoping to elevate himself up the championship order. A solid day of practice on Friday aided the Witbank teenager’s hopes of attaining his goal. From there, he put in an impressive qualifying session before finishing fourth in Race 1. In Race 2, however, Ensor-Smith would briefly lead out the field before dropping back to cross the finish line in a season’s best finish of third.
“It was a mega weekend for us. The car was near perfect, and we had a strong pace throughout the weekend. Just so happy to have converted that pace into some good points and a first podium. Looking forward to the next round in Cape Town, where I will be returning to a circuit for the first time this season. Thank you to my sponsors for the support and the team for a great job this weekend,” said Ensor-Smith.
Round 6 of the Investchem Formula 1600 takes place at Killarney International Raceway on 8-9 September.
