Kayde Cornofsky, the 2023 National Kid ROK Champion, demonstrated his unwavering determination and exceptional skill this past weekend. Despite a challenging start, he made a remarkable comeback, a testament to his character and will to compete.
Competing in what is often referred to as the most competitive class in the country, Rookie Kayde was one of 23 Mini ROK competitors vying for the top spot at Vereeniging Raceway. The venue hosted the second round of the National ROK Cup Kart Championships alongside Round 2 of the Northern Regions ROK Kart Championship.
Despite experiencing a formidable opening to his day that saw him qualify in ninth and then frustratingly struggle to a tenth-place Heat 1 finish, he remained optimistic. Kayde, however, made an impressive comeback in the remaining two heats by delivering two top-five finishes with some calculated and skillful driving. His never-say-die attitude and consistent performance in Heats 2 and 3 showed why he continues steadily rising in the rankings and solidifying his position in the sport as one of its current stars.
“Unfortunately, the day didn’t start out too well, and that set us back a little. But we were able to make a few changes and put in a better performance in the end. With the championship at the halfway mark, we still have some catching up to do. So it’s back to training and looking at areas to improve,” said Kayde.
The national championship will resume with Round 3 at Celso Scribante Raceway in Gqeberha.
