South African Sports Hall of Famer Peter Lindenberg was honoured for his contributions to multiple sports at the recent Sports Legends Awards, held at a special ceremony in Stellenbosch. He was among 26 individuals recognised by the Western Cape Department for Cultural Affairs and Sport for their impact on sport, whether as athletes, administrators, or community leaders.
“It’s deeply humbling to receive this honour in my lifetime, especially knowing that many of these awards are given posthumously. I have been fortunate to enjoy an incredible career, and this recognition serves as a meaningful tribute to the journey I’ve had in sport,” said Lindenberg upon receiving the award.
Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, delivered the keynote address at the event, stating: “Your place in history is secured, not because of a single game, a record, or a championship, but because of the lives you have changed. Your legacy is not just in the past; it lives on in every child you have mentored, every athlete you have coached, and every community you have uplifted.”
Lindenberg was recognised for his remarkable achievements in waterskiing, powerboating, and motorsports. A world champion waterskier and multiple national champion across all three disciplines, his career has left an indelible mark on South African sport.
Lindenberg’s legacy extends beyond his sporting achievements. In 2022, he penned his biography, “Flat Out and Fearless,” chronicling his journey through the highs and lows of his illustrious career. While he has retired from competitive racing, his passion for motorsport remains unwavering. He now focuses on Lindenberg Racing and the Shelby South Africa business, continuing to shape the industry through his wealth of experience and dedication.
