Round 5 of the 2024 Western Cape Regional S5 and Class S4-S3-S2 Rally Championship ran in dry and dusty conditions on Saturday 28 September 2024. That despite weather being predicted a s heavy rain and cold – it did however arrive for those heading home from Klipdale!


Shaun Jones and Jason Thorpe was made to earn their victory in the Advanced Asphalting 424 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 and they will longe remember their fourteen second win in the Overberg district.


Shaun was finishing off his project of many years standing when Owen Jones became the proud new owner of the CEJ Plant hire 434 Subaru of Llewellyn Jones and the team focused on preparing the car for the youngsters.


Warren Scholtz and David Stigling have been getting their 444 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 quicker with each passing event and now finally have the reliability to match their pace in chasing after the Jones trio. Second place a great result.
Owen Jones and Aden Bredenkamp must have started the event on top of the world in their “new” 454 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 and they certainly looked like the comfortable winners until a spin in SS3 left them stuck in fourth gear. A great recovery drive saw them win four of the six stages outright to make it a Subaru podium.


Rupert van Zyl and Justin Gay could get used to finishing well in their Die Hollandse Motor Spesialis 405 CPMCC S4 VW Polo and fourth spot was well deserved. Trevor Hodges and Ian Thebus home in fifth sport with their 421 CCMCC S3 VW Polo 2.0.
Gareth Vernon and Marius Rudolph sixth overall in their acciDent Guru 458 CPMCC S4 BMW E36 328i, the first rear wheel driven car home.


On stage times it was Herman Mathee and Ruan Reynders who actually proved the quicker in the RWD division but they incurred three minutes of lateness which dropped their popular 423 WPMC S4 Madev Datsun GX Sedan 2.0 to seventh spot overall. They were trying hard with a few spins, a missing headlight, a losse fuel cell, running out of fuel and a few more.


Keenan Sassman and Clint Lingeveldt were running a fine fourth overall until a broken fuel pump wire cost them 18min in SS3 to repair and they finished their debut event in the ex-Owen Jones 413 CCMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 in eighth overall, the final classified finishers on the rally.


Julian Calvert and Mike Knights retired their 409 CPMCC S3 VW Golf MkIII GTi 2.0 with a broken CV on SS1 as did Benjamin Johnson and Christoff Löttering in their Johnsons 468 CPMCC S3 VW Polo 2.0. Pete Isaacs and Aswine Isaacs also failing to finish in their 471 CCMCC S2 Toyota Corolla RXi 1600.


Disappointing in numbers entered but a good tussle amongst those present made this an enjoyable event for both spectators and competitors.


Shaheen Amlay and Yusuf Amlay withdrew their 401 CCMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 on Friday when Shahzaadee (wife of Shaeen) announced the arrival of their daughter. Grandfather Abduraghman and grandson (brother) Abduraghman Jnr refusing to service on Saturday!


The final round will now take place on 26 October 2024 in the Swartland.
And it may well include a very special surprise!
