It is with deep sadness that Motorsport South Africa announces the passing of Willie Hepburn, a true legend of South African motorsport, who passed away yesterday.
Willie Hepburn, affectionately known as “Hepcat” and “Oom Willie,” had a remarkable career spanning over 55 years.
He began his journey in the 1960s and quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional skills as both a driver and a mechanic. Hepburn was known for building and racing his own cars, a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport.
Among his many achievements, Hepburn set a South African land speed record in 1990, driving a Pontiac Trans-Am to a speed of 372 km/h. He also won numerous national titles, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from Motorsport South Africa in 2014.
Hepburn’s most iconic car was his red-and-white Opel Rekord, which he built in 1989 and raced until his retirement. This car, with its V8 engine and no driver aids, became a symbol of his tenacity and love for motorsport.
