The Mobil 1 V8 Supercars head back to Zwartkops Raceway for the sixth round of their 2024 Championship on 13 and 14 September. Their last outing, at Killarney International Raceway, was spoiled by unfavourable weather conditions. The GT1 cars managed to complete one heat in the Cape rain, but the GT2 drivers couldn’t race without wet tyres. Sunny and hot spring conditions in Gauteng should see a bigger grid at the Pretoria West circuit.
Julian Fameliaris (Lube-Net / Di Matteo Racing Chevrolet Corvette) claimed pole position and a dominant race win at Killarney to extend his championship lead over Thomas Reib (Mobil 1 / Café 9 Automotive Chevrolet Lumina) to 18 points. The pair have been in a season-long battle, with the advantage swinging back and forth almost every event. While they will have their eyes on each other, they cannot forget about Warren Lombard (Pepboys Automotive Ford Mustang), who claimed his first win of the season the last time the series visited Zwartkops back in June. Lombard is third on the championship log, 16 points behind Reib.
Franco di Matteo (Di Matteo Racing / GWR Racing Jaguar XKR) occupies fourth place in the standings but is more than capable of challenging the leading trio. Sam Dahl (Arc Pro Tech Ford Falcon) rounds out the GT1 field.
In the GT 2 class, Auke Compaan (Hurricane Automotive Ford Mustang) leads the way at the head of the championship standings. Steve Herbst (PREI Instrumentation / PPG Coatings / QI Systems Chevrolet Corvette), who is 32 points adrift, is his closest rival, with Shaun Holtzhausen (959 Panel Beaters & Spraypainters Ford Falcon) a further 8 points back in third. Antonie Marx is also scheduled to join the GT2 field in his Chevrolet Corvette.
After making a couple of changes to his car, Terry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Ford Mustang) will join Ben Morgenrood (Ben Morgenrood Ford and Mazda Mustang) in the GTX class.
African Group Lubricants’ Marketing Manager Nicole Jooste looks forward to the weekend’s action. “The Mobil 1 V8 Supercars will deliver a good day’s entertainment for the crowd, and with a very hot day expected, it will also be an ideal opportunity to showcase the quality of the Mobil 1 oils used in all the cars.”
As normal, Friday’s practice sessions will allow the drivers to set up their cars before Saturday morning’s qualifying session, which gets underway at 09h05. The first race for the Mobil 1 V8 Supercars is scheduled for 12h35, with the second at 15h45. Both races will run over ten laps. Spectator tickets will be available at the Zwartkops Raceway entrance. The entire Extreme Festival race day programme will be broadcast live on the Extreme Festival website.
