The 2025 Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship roared to life this past Saturday at the challenging Formula-K Raceway in Benoni. Among the rising stars was Centurion student Luhan de Wet, who delivered an impressive Micro MAX performance to secure third overall in the opening round.

Despite tricky conditions during Saturday morning’s qualifying session, Luhan showcased his skill by securing third on the grid. The drying track proved less than ideal for his wet-weather tyres, but he remained undeterred. Throughout the weekend, Luhan demonstrated exceptional pace and was consistently in the hunt for victory, emerging as one of three standout contenders.

Heat 1 saw Luhan embroiled in a fierce battle at the front. Unfortunately, contact during the race pushed him down to fourth place, denying him a podium finish. However, his trademark fighting spirit shone through in Heat 2. Refusing to back down, Luhan surged to third place, claiming his first regional podium of 2025.

Undeterred by the earlier setback, Luhan saved his best performance for the final heat. With relentless determination, he delivered a commanding drive to take the checkered flag, securing his first win of the Northern Regions season. His efforts earned him the third-place overall trophy and valuable championship points.

Reflecting on his weekend, Luhan shared his thoughts: “After the disappointment in Heat 1, I knew I had to bounce back. My team and I worked hard to stay focused, and I’m proud of how we turned things around. Winning the final heat was an incredible feeling and a great reward for everyone who supports me. A huge thank you to my team, my family, and all the fans who cheer me on. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

With the opening round now behind him, Luhan shifts his focus to the first national event of the season at the Killarney Kart Circuit. Having already impressed during pre-season testing in Cape Town, he is eager to carry his momentum forward and challenge for top honours on the national stage.

As the Northern Regions and national championships intertwine, all eyes will be on Luhan de Wet as he continues his pursuit of karting glory in 2025.
