Bradley Liebenberg leads the championship into SupaCup finale
There are just nine points in it as the GTC SupaCup championship heads for a Pretoria showdown at Zwartkops Raceway’s National Extreme Festival Finals on Saturday 14 October. Former champion Bradley Liebenberg has a fight on his hands if he wants to do the double, with Volkswagen Motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi hot on his heels in the title chase.
Liebenberg and his Hype Energy Volkswagen Polo SupaCup bounced back from a disastrous start to the season to leave the previous round in Cape Town in a nine point championship lead over Mogotsi’s identical Volkswagen Motorsport machine. The two have scored an identical amount of points through their last four races, with each taking a win and a second place, while Bradley scored two pole position and one fastest lap bonus point, and Jono took the other three fastest lap bonus points. All of which promises an epic finale!
Behind them, Keegan Campos sits third in the title chase, but he is not expected to race at Zwartkops. Which leaves Vereeniging racer Arnold Neveling with an outside chance of stealing the championship third in his Goscor Lift Trucks Polo SupaCup. To do that, Neveling basically needs to win one race and end second in the other, should Campos indeed abstain from racing. Neveling is not fully out of the woods regarding an attack from behind either, as Cape Rookie Tate Bishop is close enough to pick up any pieces and steal fourth in his Angri LTR Polo SupaCup.
For the rest, expect Jean Pierre van der Walt’s Platinum Wheels machine to continue in his tussle with lady racer Karah Hill’s Kalex Polo SupaCup, along with possible wildcard entries from occasional local SupaCup racers Dominic and Calvin Dias, and Tato Carello, as well as the prospect of an exciting and somewhat interesting late entry surprise.
GTC SupaCup gets two bites of the 14 October Pretoria Extreme Festival National Finals pie. There’s qualifying Saturday morning, followed by two races on the day, from which the 2023 South African GTC SupaCup champion will emerge. See you at Zwartkops!
