Mokoena & Reis on pole, fourth in Austria
South African GT race driver Kwanda Mokoena and teammate Max Reis enjoyed a great weekend at a chilly and wet fifth round ADAC GT Masters at Spielberg in Austria over the weekend. Reis sensationally claimed a maiden pole position and handed the Amandla Coal Fields Haupt Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 over to Mokoena in fourth position, which Kwanda maintained through to the finish.
“Saturday was quite incredible,” Kwanda admitted. “Max shocked the Spielberg paddock by putting our Amandla Coal Haupt AMG GT3 on a sensational pole by mastering the tricky six degree temperature. He dropped to fourth in his stint and I was able to deliver a consistent and good pace to maintain position through to the finish. What a day!
“Sunday was a bit more difficult; it was wet in qualifying and even colder at four degrees and I just could not switch on the tyres. The race was also wet and I was able to make up a few places before handing over to Max, but we retired after 19 laps, so that was it. Let’s rather focus on Saturday though, it was one of our best races of the year for sure, so many a positive to take home, too!
“Well done to Max on that pole, and thanks to our team, sponsors and fans, here in Germany, around the world and at home in South Africa for all the support,” former South African Endurance Champion Kwanda concluded. “We have one ADAC GT Masters round left to race at Hockenheim over the 21-22 October weekend, so let’s finish even better!”
