Mokoena passes rookie test with flying colours
Kyalami youngster Kwanda Mokoena began his international racing career with a steady debut at the season opening ADAC GT Masters at the Hockenheimring over the weekend. South African Endurance champion Mokoena shared his Engstler Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II with fellow rookie Dylan Yip as the duo delivered a workmanlike effort to come home tenth in both races.
Racing against drivers from 15 countries in glorious early summer conditions, Kwanda qualified the car on Saturday and took the first stint, before Dylan took over. Yip then qualified for Sunday’s race, started, and handed the car over to Mokoena at the pit stop “This weekend was a huge learning curve for Dylan and me,” Kwanda explained. “So the brief was to keep it tidy and bring it home in one piece, which is precisely what we did.
“We are still lacking a little bit of pace, but nothing to be too concerned about. We have also now learned the ropes, and how each weekend goes and we are getting the hang of the way of the ADAC GT Masters. We are of course in great hands with Engstler Racing and the team was delighted that we enjoyed two good, clean races. So, it’s job done and onward and upward from here!”
There is now a 4-week break before Kwanda, Dylan, and their Engstler Racing Audi head to Norisring for the second round of the ADAC GT Masters on the weekend of and 9 July.
