Regional classes shine at Blockbuster Festival
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit’s Blockbuster Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola thrilled Gauteng race fans with great racing throughout the day on Saturday. Gauteng’s regular Northern Regions regular Festival classes joined the National categories in the fun, and delivered brilliant racing as the Dunlop V8 Supercars, ATE Brakes VW Challenge, BMW M Performance Parts Series, DOE Formula Vees and Ferro Energia 111s contributed to a truly memorable day of racing.
Warren Lombard put his Mustang on Dunlop V8 Supercar pole from Thomas Reib’s Lumina and Terry Wilford’s Mustang. Lombard led Wilford and Reib until Terry stopped to gift Thomas that second on the final tour. Ben Morgenrood’s Falcon was fourth from Richard Fuller’s similar car while Sam Dahl’s Mustang made best of a tight midfield dice ahead of GT2 winner Auke Compaan’s Corvette. Sixth on the reverse grid second race, Reib made best of a wild first lap to lead the way, while Morgenrood and Lombard came from behind to steal second and third from Richard Fuller on the final lap.
Treacherous Wayne Masters took two back for the older generation when he beat exuberant young gun Jayden Goosen to a double ATE Brakes VW Challenge victory at Kyalami. Ian Walker was third from Elna Croeser, while Stuart Mack continued unbeaten in Class B from Francis Aldrich and a much improved Nicole Lombard. Michael Zapheriou returned to racing in Class C pole position a year on from his horror accident but he had to make do with third in the first race behind Bryce Pillay and Adriaan de Beer. The second race delivered the same top 3 results in all three classes.
Ryan Naicker won the opening BMW M Performance Parts Series race from Class B rivals Sav Gualtieri and Leon Loubser. Renier Smith took Class B from Anton Pommersheim and Fabio Fedetto, and Hein van der Merwe defeated Nishal Singh and Nick Naidoo in Class C. Naicker went on to do the double over Gualtieri and Loubser, Smith did the same over Pommersheim in B and Nick beat Anand Naidoo and Lenard Archer in C. Andre van Vuuren took the separate BMW M Performance DEF race from Paolo Cavalieri and Michael Grobler, where Eddie Rodrigues took class E and Kyan Boodaya F. Bernard de Gouveia then took race 2 from Grobler and Olerato Sekudu, where Wessel Mostert won E and Gerald Anthony Class F.
Lendl Jansen took a DOE Formula Vee double over Kyle Watt, while son Vaughn and father, Peter Hills shared out the third places. Peter was also fourth in race 2 over Gert van den Berg, Theodore Vermaak, Shaun van der Linde, MD Bester and Johan Gouws. Van den Berg was fourth in heat 2 from Gouws, Vaughn Hills, Vermaak and van der Linde.
George Economides powered his wild turbo Golf to the first Ferro Energia 111 Sports, GT and Saloons race over GT rivals, Mark du Toit’s BMW Z4 and Phillip Meyer in a Porsche 924 GTR. Wouter Roos’ VW Golf MK7 topped Class A in fourth from Wayne Robb’s Ford Focus 225 ST, while Polo lads Miguel Dias’ won Class B and Christopher Tait C. Economides then did the double over du Toit, Robb and Meyer, while Wayne Lebotschy’s Golf took Class B and Tait C. Tyron Pillay’s Golf won Superhatch.
