Round 4 of the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship concluded on 22 June, marking the halfway point of the regional championship. Kian Spies, a Senior MAX regular and University of Stellenbosch student, delivered a gritty performance at Zwartkops Kart Raceway, securing fourth place overall and earning valuable points towards the championship.
Kian’s Saturday started with a fourth-row start in the opening heat, where the Xtreme Racing Team driver made several assured passes to work his way up through the field to secure a fifth-place finish. Heat 2 would see Kian engaged in a battle for fourth, eventually triumphing to miss out on a podium. The final heat would see another mature race, with Kian again making up several positions during the race to cross the finish line in fifth but be promoted to fourth after post-race penalties were applied to a competitor ahead.
“In all honestly we had a good weekend,” said Kian. “We had good pace throughout practice and carried that into the races. I messed up in qualifying but managed to put in a competitive performance in each heat to finish towards the front. While I had my eye set on a top three finish, I am just happy for these results considering how we struggled at the previous round in Vereeniging.”
With the penultimate round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge Kart Championships just around the corner, Kian is gearing up for an exciting return to the Formula-K Raceway, Benoni, on 5-6 July.
