Gauteng teenager Jayden Goosen maintained his 2024 national championship hopes with a win in the third round of the VW Rookie Cup at the Aldo Scribante Raceway, part of the National Extreme Festival.
Jayden, who qualified third on Saturday morning, put in a gritty performance to finish as runner-up in Race 1 and victor in Race 2 and walk away with the day’s winner’s trophy.
Starting from third on the grid, Jayden accelerated quickly for a drag race down to Turn-1 and managed to enter the first bend in second place. Throughout the race, he kept pressure on the leader but was unable to make a pass for the lead, ultimately settling for second.
Jayden, a former kart racer and INEX Legends driver made a solid start in Race 2, starting from second on the grid. He engaged in another straight-line dual to the first corner, where he initially lost out. However, it was only a matter of time before he overtook the leader, running at the front until the end of the race, where the chequered flag awaited him for his maiden win in the championship.
“This win was long overdue,” said Jayden. “We’ve been working tirelessly to sharpen my skills and get a proper feel for this car. It’s completely different from anything I’ve driven, so winning and finally having that monkey off my back is so rewarding. We are a few points behind in the championship but if we can continue this form, we might have a shout. Huge thank you to my sponsors and to VW Motorsport.”
Round 4 of the VW Rookies Cup returns on 9-10 August at the Killarney International Raceway.
