With Troy crowned, the Investchem title fight is for second
With 2023 MSA South African National Investchem Formula 1600 champion Troy Dolinschek already crowned following yet another dominant performance at home at Killarney last time out, the championship focus now shifts to who will end up second in the chase at Zwartkops’ 14 October Extreme Festival Finale.
Having won nine of his twelve races so far this season, new champion Dolinschek remains the clear favourite to also win the Zwartkops races in his Sujean Property Investments Mygale. But the tussle for championship runner-up will be of just as great interest this weekend. With 22 points on the table, and Capetonian Mint Wrapworks racer Jason Coetzee having only 10 and 12 points respectively between himself and the second and third men, it’s still all to do for second.
In effect, all Coetzee needs do is to finish ahead of those two men, Formula 1600 veteran Nicholas van Weely’s Magnificent Paints & Hardware machine, and Gerard Geldenhuys’ Abacus Divisions car, in the first race to clinch second in the championship. But that’s of course easier said than done. Behind them, it’s just as exciting among the rest of Investchem Formula 1600’s 1600cc Ford-powered wings and slicks Mygale field.
Just twelve points separate the next five cars fighting it out for fifth. Investchem lad Siyabonga Mankonkwana holds a six-point advantage over karting champion and rookie, KC Ensor-Smith’s Vitro Frameless Glass machine, who sits equal on points with Alex Vos’ Investchem DV Building Supplies version.
They also have Antwan Geldenhuys’ second Abacus Divisions car, and Andrew Schofield’s Fly Safair Mygale snapping at their championship heels. Meanwhile, Shrien Naidoo’s Production X entry, Karabo Malemela’s KMFT Morita car, and AMD lad Storm Lanfear are all engrossed in their own championship fight for tenth.
The stalwart Formula Ford Kents will be back racing alongside the Formula 1600s at Zwartkops. Mr. Investchem Ian Schofield’s Mygale remains the man to beat. He will have Graham Hepburn’s Qualipak Van Diemen and Duncan Vos’ Swift, teammates Allen Meyer’s Van Diemen and Rick Morris’ Mygale, and Ronald Van Weely in a Magnificent Paints & Hardware Van Diemen will be out to do just that.
The Investchem Formula 1600 and Formula Ford Kent action goes down at Pretoria’s 14 October National Extreme Festival Finale. See you at Zwartkops!
