Defending Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Champion Julian Fameliaris heads to Red Star Raceway this weekend for the first of two visits to the Mpumalanga circuit in 2024. The “Rolling Thunder,” as it is often referred to, is the third round of the championship and forms part of the weekend’s Regional Extreme Festival.
Two points adrift of championship leader Thomas Reib, the Lube-Net/Di Matteo Racing Chevrolet Corvette driver hopes to add to his wins column and leave the Delmas circuit as the outright championship leader as he bids for a consecutive title in 2024.
Up until now, it has been a closely contested affair, with the two drivers sharing the wins and runner-up positions. Reib leads out Fameliaris courtesy only of two pole-position bonus points. In 2023, Fameliaris triumphed over the field at the same circuit, bagging a win and runner-up finish on his way to being crowned the champion eventually. He’ll no doubt be looking to finish on top again this weekend.
The first race on Saturday will start at 10:20 and consist of eight laps. The second race, which will be ten laps long, will take place at 14:05. Spectator tickets are available for purchase at the entrance to Red Star Raceway.
