On Saturday, Alonzo de Oliveira claimed a double heat victory to take the overall win at Round 2 of the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships in Vereeniging.
Alonzo, a rising star in his second season of karting, showcased his determination and skill from the start. In a nail-biting qualifying session, he secured a commendable second position, a mere 0.008 seconds behind the pole-sitter, Sebastian Shuttleworth.
The race was a thrilling battle between Alonzo and Sebastian, with the two drivers pushing each other to their limits. Alonzo emerged victorious, winning two of the three heats securing the overall win. His performance was unmatched, as he recorded the fastest lap of the day and was the only driver to clock a sub-one-minute six-second lap.
“I am thrilled with the results. I knew it would always be close between Sebastian and me, but in the end, we managed to take two of the three wins on offer to secure the overall result. Thank you to the team and to everyone who came out in support,” said Alonzo.
Alonzo will focus on the next race at Idube Raceway, which will host the second national round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge on 3-4 May.
