Bambino ace Alonzo de Oliveira maintained his lead in the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships following another star performance on 22 June, beating out his rivals to claim a hat trick of podiums, including a heat victory at Zwartkops Kart Raceway.
Alonzo, the smallest driver in the field, qualified his Top Kart chassis in second on Saturday morning. From second on the grid, he battled his championship rival Sebastian Shuttleworth for the win before settling for second as the chequered flag dropped. Heat 2 would see the TrinityHouse Glenvista student of Portuguese descent take an easy victory, with Sebastian suffering a mechanical issue. The two would again go head-to-head in the final heat, with Sebastian edging out Alonzo to cross the finish line first. However, Alonzo was crowned the winner on the day having accumulated more points and, more importantly, increased his lead in the regional championship.
“We had a strong day despite not always being the quickest kart out there. I think Sebastian drove extremely well and was unlucky in the second heat. But we hopefully put on a good show for the fans, and my focus will now turn to the upcoming national in a few weeks. Thank you to my team and my sponsors for their support,” said Alonzo.
Alonzo will return to the circuit on 5-6 July for the penultimate round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge Kart Championships, making a welcome return to the Formula-K Raceway, Benoni.
Alonzo extends his thanks to NBR Racing, S.Y. Meats Wholesale Butchery, Y2K Audio Germiston, MSLB Projects and Amigos Portugueses.
