Six-year-old Alonzo de Oliviera will make his second appearance of the 2024 season this weekend as the opening round of the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships is set to get underway at Zwartkops Kart Raceway.
Alonzo, who participated in last weekend’s KZN Rotax regional round at iDube Raceway, put in an inspired drive despite the tricky conditions. Regardless, the Trinity House Grade 1 pupil claimed the overall victory, recording two wins and a runner-up finish that prepared him well for this weekend’s regional competition.
While a rookie in 2023, Alonzo, who lists Fernando Alonso as his favourite Formula 1 driver, is set to be one of the leading Bambino drivers this season but will face some stern competition from several other drivers. While racing out of the NBR Racing stable, Alonzo is backed by S.Y. Meats Wholesale Butchery, Y2K Audio Germiston and MSLB Projects.
Three race heats are scheduled for Saturday. Entry to the circuit is free, and spectators are encouraged to attend.
