Visser comes out on top of a fraught day’s racing
Championship leader Charl Michael Visser emerged victorious from an epic CompCare Polo Cup round at Zwartkops outside Pretoria on Saturday. Visser fought back gamely from a Superpole scare to end fourth in the first race, before winning the second heat and ending second in the final, as he also turned in the fastest lap in each race. That was enough to take overall victory on the day and consolidate his championship lead.
“What a day!” Tyre Zone team Red racer Charl admitted. “We won overall and kept our championship lead intact, so that’s great news. But man, it was a hard day at Zwartkops! We missed pole by a hundredth of a second and then I picked up a piece of broken kerb out of the last corner on my Superpole lap which cost me a bit of time, so we ended up starting sixth.
“The first lap was crazy, but I found myself in fourth and managed to get past Giordano Lupini for third for a bit, and then he fought back so it was fourth. But I got the fastest lap, which gave a bonus point as well as pole position for race 2. I won that lights to flag with the fastest lap again, so that was cool. I started second in the final, but I could not do anything about Gio, so I chased hard and did another fastest lap!
The three fastest lap bonus points allowed me to open my championship lead over Dawie van der Merwe, while my total race time was good enough for the overall win on a spectacular day of racing. Well done to Anthony Pretorius on his first win and to Gio in the final.
Huge thanks to Ian Rayner, Petrus Geel and my Team Red for a fantastic car, to my mechanic Zefry for all the hard work, my driver coach Devin Robinson, and Uncle Neville for the race talks. Also huge thanks to my sponsor Tyre Zone, to my mom and dad, my brother Kyle, and Uncle Nick and Kelsey. Now we head to PE in a month, where it’s anyone’s game. I can’t wait!
