Cape Town racer Charl Michael Visser opened his 2023 CompCare Polo Cup championship campaign with an overall victory in the opening weekend of the season at Kyalami’s 9 Hour support races. Visser dominated the weekend, taking pole position, a victory in race two, and the overall win for the weekend.
“I am happy with a very good start to the season and to come home from Kyalami in the championship lead,” Charl explained. “It could have been a perfect weekend, were it not for a small mistake at the start of the first heat, but I’ll take that on the chin and come back harder and stronger!
“We were quick throughout practice and I put my Universal Racing, Charl Electrical and Tyre Zone Polo GTI onto an easy pole position. “I got away well in the first heat in searing Kyalami heat, but I missed second gear and that allowed three or four cars to get past. “I fought straight back and was back up to third halfway around the first lap, when the safety car came out for another crash.
“They kept us out there for four laps because the extraction car also got stuck in the sand and then we only had four laps left to race. “It took a few corners to get past for second, but that allowed the leader to open a two second gap, so I fought back as hard as I could. “I was right on his tail and with a push to pass in hand with a lap to go when the flag came out a lap early! “Such a pity because I was robbed of the chance to fight for the win.
“The second race was much easier, even if I was under pressure, but I led all the way. I was able to manage the gap to the guys behind me and pulled out a little on the final lap for the second race win. “So a good weekend all round and a positive start to the season. “We go home to Killarney next, and I cannot wait to race in front of my favourite Cape Town crowd on the 18th of March!”
Charl has another racing appointment this coming weekend as the 5-time SA karting champion heads to iDube in KwaZulu Natal to defend his South African Rotax Senior Max championship, this Saturday 4 March.
