Investchem Formula 1600 Championship leader KC Ensor-Smith makes his way to the East London Grand Prix Circuit for the fifth round of South Africa’s premier single-seater championship later this week.

With three rounds remaining, the Witbank teenager takes a six-point lead into a circuit that saw him record his best result and maiden podium in his 2023 rookie season. In 2024, the Africa Heating-backed driver has been in solid form, standing on the podium six times already, two of those as the winner. Both wins came at the previous round and included the multiple national karting champions’ maiden pole position. Ensor-Smith’s pace this season has been phenomenal, and the former Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy member has recorded the fastest lap at every round so far.

With historical roots, the circuit, formerly known as the Prince George Circuit, underwent several redesigns over numerous decades and shortened from its original 24.461 km to become what we know today as the East London Grand Prix Circuit. Modified to meet Formula One regulations in 1959, the circuit was built into a seaside amphitheatre with a length of 3.92 km. It hosted three rounds of the South African Grand Prix in the 1960s before the race was moved to Kyalami. Home to South African Motorsport’s fastest bend (Potter’s Pass Curve), the circuit will again be a hive of activity this weekend as spectators support the National Extreme Festival tour.

“It’s always a privilege to compete at such a historic circuit. In my only visit there since switching to circuit racing in 2023, I have had good results. I’m hoping we can continue that this weekend and extend my lead in the championship. Friday will be key for us as we look to find the right setup ahead of a very important qualifying session on Saturday. Thank you to the team for all the preparations ahead of the weekend and to all my sponsors for backing me this season.”

Spectators can purchase tickets at the circuit entrance on Saturday, 27 July. Tickets are R100.00 per person, and children under 12 enter for free. The entire race day programme will also be broadcast live on https://extremefestival.co.za/live/.

Ensor-Smith thanks Vito Frameless, African Heating, Master Stairs and Sparco for their support.
