Chemical Logistics on threshold of SATC glory

With 33 points on the table, and Robert Wolk in a 25-point South African Touring Car Championship lead, can the Johannesburg Chemical Logistics BMW 128ti TC driver wrap up his third championship at Killarney’s Extreme Festival on Saturday 21 September?

“It’s not impossible to wrap it up at Killarney with the final round still left to race,” Robert admits. “I have a 25 point lead so all we need is eight points to clinch the 2024 South African Touring Car Championship this weekend. But that’s not our objective. We need to keep on doing what we’ve been doing all year, which is to keep on piling on the points, so if we get to Saturday evening with a few more points advantage and the job still to finish at Zwartkops in October, then so be it. I know my Chemical Logistics team will hand me a perfect BMW 128ti TC, so it’s all up to me in the end, but bring it on!”

Killarney may however be a slightly different prospect for the team’s Cape Town home hero Julian van der Wat, following a previous round that brought a double-DNF to drop him down from second to third in the title chase after an off early in the opening heat in his Investchem Volkswagen Golf GTI TC. “A little home glory would go a long way to help us forget that dreadful day in East London,” Julian smiled. “I have a pretty good record at Killarney, so the objective this weekend will be for a bit more of that as we chase to grab that championship second back over the last few races.”

Third team member, SA Touring Cars rookie Andrew Schofield has quietly piled up the championship points and he’s looking forward to finally getting back to a track he has already raced on in his FlySafair Chemical Logistics BMW 128ti TC. “It’s been a thrilling learning curve since I stepped up to the South African Touring Cars for 2024,” Andrew points out. “Every track so far has been a learning experience for the first time in a Touring Car, but Cape Town is my first repeat track. So I’m looking forward to racing with a bit of data to lean on this time as we continue picking up points as we go. Can’t wait!”

“Chemical Logistics WCT Racing arrives at Killarney in a strong championship position and the plan is to leave even stronger,” team manager Stuart Thompson adds. “It is plausible that we can wrap it up with Robert, while we will work with Julian to fight that second place back, and I’m sure Andy is looking forward to finally returning to a track he’s raced a Touring Car at before.” Team principal Ian Schofield concluded: “Killarney always delivers great racing to a large and enthusiastic crowd and we look forward to contributing to that action in winning style. Good luck team!”
