Mikel Bezuidnhout will be back in the kart this weekend as he competes in the penultimate round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge Championship. Mikel, who only just returned from main circuit duties in his Huawei Mobile South Africa Formula 1600 Mygale, takes on a competitive field of national Senior MAX drivers this weekend.
Following rounds at Killarney and Zwartkops, Mikel, backed by Vivo Mobile SA and MTN Cosmo-net, is ranked sixth in the championship standings, less than 30 points off the leader. Having recorded a best finish of fifth this season, the Johannesburg teenager will be intent on claiming a maiden national podium and elevating himself up the points table.
For the first time this season, the competition is back at the fast and flowing Formula-K Raceway, Benoni. This return to familiar ground will delight and excite the event as drivers take on the 1612-metre E-Layout of the circuit. In the past, the Gauteng drivers held a slight advantage over the out-of-towners, but as it is the first race to be held there this season, any advantage has been negated.
The action started on Thursday with an unofficial practice, followed by an official practice on Friday. Micro MAX qualifying is scheduled for 15:52 on Friday ahead of Saturday’s three race heats. Entry is free, making this event accessible to all motorsport enthusiasts. We can’t wait to see you there!
