Mikel Bezuidenhout, a native of Johannesburg, demonstrated commendable skill during his inaugural participation in the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone this past weekend. He was a member of a six-driver team competing for the esteemed Formula Ford trophy at this annual event, which attracts competitors from around the globe.
Competing under the KMR Sport banner, Bezuidenhout encountered various challenges during practice, yet he successfully qualified fourth in his group on Saturday. Positioned in the second row of the starting grid, the Investchem Formula 1600 rookie was in a solid position to contend for a podium finish. However, an incident caused him to fall further down the rankings. Demonstrating commendable composure and focus, he executed an effective recovery strategy, allowing him to regain lost positions and ultimately secure a fourth-place finish. This result earned him a place in the semi-finals scheduled for Sunday.
Starting from the seventh position on the grid, Bezuidenhout demonstrated a resilient performance, effectively defending against numerous challenges while seeking to improve his standing. The ongoing competition for positions impeded his progress, resulting in a finish in seventh place, which allowed him to advance to the final. Given that the final race operated under a “winner takes all” format, the intensity of the competition heightened significantly, leading to particularly spirited and aggressive racing. Bezuidenhout would finish in an impressive 13th in his maiden Walter Hayes Trophy that saw more than 100 drivers compete.
“I would like to extend a big thank you to KMR Sport, Investchem, and my family for this opportunity. Being here is a privilege that I will cherish. Competing against some of the best drivers in the world at the iconic Silverstone is truly special. I am also pleased with my overall performance; finishing just outside the top ten on my debut is definitely satisfying. I hope to have this opportunity again,” said Bezuidenhout.
