The 2023 South African Rotax MAX Challenge is set to conclude with the crowning of a national Bambino champion this weekend at Zwartkops Kart Raceway. One racer to watch out for is seven-year-old Luhan de Wet from Centurion, competing for his first national title.
De Wet, who leads Adriaan Steyn in the championship standings, has shown tremendous talent on the track and has worked hard alongside his team to prepare for this event. He started the season strong, winning three races in KZN and two more in Benoni. While still finishing on the podium in all three heats at the penultimate round, the De Wet Automotive Performance, Service & Repairs backed driver saw his lead decrease to just 2.5 points heading to the finale.
“We’ve worked really hard this season to ensure Luhan stays in front,” stated Sharl de Wet, Luhan’s father. “We head into the final round with really nothing between him and Adriaan (Steyn). They are both quick around Zwartkops and are usually on each other’s bumpers. So, it will be an anxious four heats for the team, I’m sure.”
Thursday and Friday will see official practice, with a Qualifying Session on Friday afternoon. Saturday will see the business end of the weekend and four race heats. While entry to the circuit is free, you can still catch the action live on YouTube by tapping the link below.
