Forget the fact that the rally teams were concentrating on scoring points and that the track racers were armed with lighter cars that did not have to carry their spare wheels under pain of exclusion.
Driver and navigator working in unison considered a normal environment in the world of rallying but though they may be more familiar with the circuit layout actually sharing information at speed was most certainly a new concept to most, although there were a few poorly disguised rally teams present amongst those classified as Challengers.
Seven stages, all on asphalt, with 41 cars all wanting to speed through the same narrow gaps in plain view of an appreciative audience in near perfect weather certainly made the 2024 All Tar Rally Challenge a most enjoyable experience.
Inevitably there was contact made with those immovable objects but they will all return for more in 2025. Dexter Bruce and Junaid Hamid will have an entire year to rub it in that they put their Challenge A&K Auto 143C BMW E36 328i on top of the combined podium after a faultless display of determined but clean driving.
Keenan Sassman and Clint Lingeveldt surprised even themselves by placing their Howard Centre Motors 413 CCMCC S4 BMW E36 328i second, but being the first rally team home would be even more satisfying as they were ahead of all six S5 entries. Kosie and Sebastian Swanepoel ran out of brakes, entertained the crowd with a few high speed spins and still managed third overall in their KSD 446 WPMC S4 BMW E36 328i.
Shaun Jones flew the Jones flag in fourth spot in the Advanced Asphalting 424 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4. Running on smaller wheels he and Jason Thorpe enjoyed a fairly blemish free run to a fine fourth.
Shaheen and Yusuf Amlay placed their new, very neat, Amlay Motorsport 402 CCMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 fourth, just one second shy of 424, and they will want to return to the podium come Klipdale in September.
Sixth overall really an impressive result for Wayne and Stacy Wilson in the battleship DTM Helderberg 23C Nissan Maxima 3.0. Banjamin Johnson and Christoff Löttering seventh in their neat and ever improving Johnson Construction 468 CPMCC S3 VW Polo 6R. Gareth Vernon and Marius Rudolph well pleased with 8th overall in their acciDent Guru 459 CPMCC S4 BMW E36 328i.
Matt-Jason Köhler and Lloyd Brady 9th in the challenge disguised rally Köhler Pac 36C BMW E36 328i with Gerard and Samantha Kloppers 10th in their equally impressive 24C Nissan Maxima 3.0. Rupert van Zyl and Justin Gay overcame power steering and braking problems to place their Die Hollandse Motor Spesialis 405 CPMCC S4 VW Polo 2.0 20v 15th with Arno Michels and Ilanza Smalberger 16th in their Alkom Tool 66C BMW E36 Cup 328i. A very entertaining Divan and Juan Wentzel 17th in their Motul 26C BMW E36 Cup 328i – somehow without any tail end damage.
Seraaj and Nur Amlay reluctantly let go fo the enormous rope they swiped from the oval fraternity and placed their Amlay Construction 457 CCMCC S3 VW Golf MkIII GTi 18th. Ruan Reynders and Herman Mathee well pleased with 19th spot in the very neat Rey Trucking 54B Ford Escort MkII, a Zakspeed Gp2 replica.
Tiaan and Anke Burger put their relationship to the test with a number of novel new sections added to special stages but the bright Burgers Equipment and Spares 69C BMW E36 Cup 328i made it home in 20th spot. Erin Joshua and Leroy Peterson made it home to 21st spot with their P&P Engineering 462 CCMCC S2 Toyota Conquest with the really neat Ceres Toyota 439 WPMC S2 Ford Escort 1600 Sport of Johann and Petra Zulch 22nd.
Terry and Tyler Croy brought their Racing for Autism 448 CCMCC S2 Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 home in 23rd place with Warren Scholtz and David Stigling 24th in the Vape Station 444 CPMCC S5 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4×4 after having lost nearly seven minutes on the opening stage when the car simply cut out.
