The penultimate round of MSA’s National ROK Cup Karting Championship concluded with Kid ROK pilot Kayde Cornofsky’s overall victory following a dominant performance at the Killarney Kart Raceway in Cape Town. With two victories and a fourth-place finish in Heat 2, the Gauteng-based driver took the outright lead in the championship with a round remaining.
After recording the fastest lap in Qualifying and securing a front-row start, Cornofsky romped off into the distance in Heats 1 and 3. While he remained the quickest driver throughout the weekend, a sudden and unexplained loss of power saw him lose three positions midway through the race. While he was able to recover, he could not make up the ground lost and finished just off the podium to ruin a potential hat trick of wins. Cornofsky has taken five of the last six victories and heads to the final round with a six-point advantage in the championship.
“I’m very happy with the result today,” said Cornofsky. “We accomplished what we set out to do,: to get the victory and the points on offer. We were unlucky not to make it three wins with a bizarre drop in power in Heat 2. Fortunately I was able to recover and continue to finish fourth. I could not have done it without the assistance of my team and I must thank them as well as the support I received from my family and sponsors.”
While the final round of the national championship is scheduled for the Vereeniging Kart Circuit on September 23, Cornofsky returns to regional competition on September 2 at the same venue.
