Cape Town resident Manelisi Nkomo ended a challenging weekend of results with a top-seven finish in the final heat of Round 2 of MSA’s ROK Cup Karting Championship. The Formula-K Kart Circuit round marked the halfway point in the championship.
Nkomo qualified in 15th place on Friday afternoon but faced a tough challenge on Saturday morning as he had to compete from the back half of a 22-kart grid. Unfortunately, his challenge was cut short following an opening lap incident that saw him finish in 21st place. While he improved somewhat in the second heat crossing the finish line in 12th, he was handed a five-second Nose-Cone Infringement penalty dropping him down to 16th.
Nkomo, however, saved his best for last with an impressive seventh-place finish in the final heat. Starting 12th, Nkomo made up four places over the first two laps but was then passed again to fall back to tenth. He would dig deep and take back the positions lost to finish eighth as the chequered flag dropped. A post-race penalty to a competitor ahead saw him promoted a place to finish seventh to end off a challenging second national round.
Round 3 of the National ROK Cup Championship resumes on 4-5 August in Cape Town at the Killarney International Raceway.
