Gauteng’s finest takes on the Cape’s best in Zwartkops Formula 1600
So far in 2023, Investchem Formula 1600 has been about two young men, one from Gauteng, the other out of the Cape. Now four races into the championship, there’s not much to separate Gauteng lad Gerard Geldenhuys and Cape Town lightie Troy Dolinschek as SA’s top single seater championship heads to Geldenhuys’ home round at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on Saturday 20 May.
Abacus Divisions Racing driver Geldenhuys and Sujean Property Investments lad Dolinschek each won a race apiece at both the Kyalami season opener and at Killarney in March. Gerard’s second and third in the other two races places however see him five points clear of Troy heading to Zwartkops. Dolinschek’s lion’s share of fastest lap and pole position bonus points add to his tally, but the Cape team will be looking for a clean weekend at Zwartkops.
Behind them in the all-Mygale SJ Ford pack, consistent veteran Nicholas van Weely looms large in third aboard his Magnificent Paints & Hardware machine. He’s just one point clear of another Cape youngster, Jason Coetzee’s Mint Wrapworks car. Impressive Investchem lad Siyabonga Mankonkwana sits in no man’s land behind them, but ready to pick up any pieces from fifth in the title chase.
It’s tight for sixth, with Alex Vos’ Investchem DV Building Supplies Mygale a couple of points clear of top rookie and karting sensation KC Ensor-Smith in his Vitro Frameless Glass car. He’s on even points with another Formula 1600 stalwart, Andrew Schofield in his Fly Safair Investchem version.
KMFT Morita racer Karabo Malemela is next up in joint ninth with Antwan Geldenhuys, who will be keen to get his wretched season facing the right direction in the second Abacus Divisions Mygale. Storm Lanfear’s AMD Engineering Investchem car and Shrien Naidoo in a Production X Mygale in turn sit right behind them in the title chase.
Killarney produced some stunning racing last time out. Close dicing and some impressive come from behind performances were the order of the day. Zwartkops’ Investchem Formula 1600 Extreme Festival action promises to be just as thrilling. Don’t miss it!
