Round 1 of the MSA South African Rotax MAX Challenge Championship is set to commence at the scenic iDube Raceway in Camperdown, KZN, this weekend and will see Capetonian Matthew Chiwara making his debut in the national Junior MAX class.
Chiwara competed in the Mini MAX class last season but has stepped up a class for 2023. Finishing ninth overall, Chiwara, backed by Sodi Karts, recorded a best finish of fourth at last season’s event. While the one-kilometre circuit is known for its breathtaking scenery, it is one of the most challenging circuits on the national calendar. With spectacular elevation changes, tight hairpins, and fast-sweeping bends, the circuit boasts names such as ‘Pipeline’, ‘Hockey Stick’ and ‘Thunderdome’. Chiwara will again be racing out of the ANGRi Racing Kart Academy stable and will enjoy the expertise of former karters, serving as driving instructors and technicians.
“I’m looking forward to competing at iDube again,” said Chiwara. “It’s undoubtedly a challenging circuit, but no other circuit offers what iDube does. This year I will be competing in the Junior MAX with slightly more speed, so we’ll have to make the best of practice day to get our setup correct for Saturday. Friday will see several practice sessions followed by a warm-up, qualifying, and three race heats. Spectators are welcomed with entrance free.
