Victron Energy and Blue Power Active Ambassador Kyle Lawrence triumphed over his DD2 Masters rivals this past weekend as he claimed the second round championship victory at MSA’s South African Rotax MAX Challenge National Championship held at the Formula-K Kart Circuit in Benoni, South Africa.
After a long day of practice on Friday, Lawrence missed out on the pole position by just over a tenth-of-a-second on Saturday morning after the Qualifying Session was postponed to the next day due to fading light on Friday afternoon. While the Benoni resident recorded the race’s fastest lap, he would finish as the runner-up to Eugene Brittz. Starting from the pole for Heat 2, Lawrence would briefly lose the lead to Brittz before reclaiming it and triumphing over his rival.
The final heat would be a similar affair, with Lawrence starting from second alongside Brittz. Lawrence would, however, take the lead of the race on the opening lap, a position he would maintain over the 10-lap race distance to cross the finish line as the winner. His two wins and a second place would see him crowned the Round 2 winner.
“A strong result for me today after a closely-contested Masters round,” said Lawrence. “Eugene (Brittz) is a top racer, and I had to dig deep today. He didn’t make it easy, but what I respect about the man is that he is a fair racer. Thanks to Victron Energy for the support, and I look forward to the next national round in Cape Town.”
Lawrence will return for Round 4 of the MSA Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship on 10 June.
