The iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will host the second round of the 2025 Extreme Festival this weekend, with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) preparing for another thrilling display of high-performance action across multiple categories. The forecast for the weekend is mild and dry—ideal conditions for what is set to be a fast and competitive outing on one of the country’s most demanding circuits.
With its high-speed straights, sweeping curves, and technical sections, Kyalami is a driver’s circuit in every sense. The blend of elevation changes and braking zones rewards both commitment and precision—something the GR Cup competitors will need in abundance come race day.
GR Cup Media Challenge – GR Yaris
South Africa’s top motoring writers return to the grid in the GR Cup Media Challenge, racing manual GR Yaris models once again this season. Nabil Abdool (SuperSport) leads the standings after a commanding performance in the opening round, with Kyle Kock (CAR Magazine) and Phuti Mpyane (TimesLive) in close pursuit.
Also taking to the track this weekend are Lawrence Minnie (AutoTrader), Charl Bosch (Citizen), and Willem van der Putte (Independent Media/IOL), each determined to put in a strong performance at the legendary Kyalami circuit.
GR Cup Dealer Challenge – GR Corolla
In the GR Cup Dealer Challenge, Devon Scott leads the championship, but this weekend it will be Paul de Vos representing the GR Driving Academy as the teammates share driving duties throughout the season.
Mario de Sousa (Motus) and Werner Venter (NMI Menlyn/Centurion) remain in close contention, while Andries de Villiers (Rola Motors), Rudolf Boonzaier (Waterberg Toyota), and Tiaan Combrink (Halfway Toyota) will look to close the gap with consistent results.
A new name joins the grid this weekend as Riaan du Ru makes his debut for CFAO Mobility, adding even more depth to an already stacked field of dealer talent.
GR86 Development Academy
In the GR86 Development Academy, Jason Coetzee leads the points after a strong opening round, but faces stiff competition from the likes of Mikel Bezuidenhout, Kent Swartz, and Khanya Ngwenya. The next generation of racing talent will once again get the chance to sharpen their skills in identical rear-wheel-drive GR86 machines around one of the most prestigious circuits in South African motorsport.
SATC and SupaStarlet
TGRSA will also be represented in the 2025 South African Touring Car Championship (SATC), where the driver lineup remains unchanged from 2024: Michael van Rooyen (the “Rustenburg Rocket”), former champion Saood Variawa, and the ever-improving Nathi Msimanga.
In addition, the SupaStarlet will return to action with Dawie van der Merwe behind the wheel. The compact but capable race car continues to draw attention and offers fans a unique entry point into the world of competitive racing.
