Jon Whitfield’s journey began as a telecommunications technician, but his true passion for cars, car sales, and motorsport soon took over. From East London to Roy Hesketh Racing, he explored everything from 250 karts to Renault R8s. He was also a musician, a dreamer at heart, and someone always looking for his next adventure.

Jon eventually found himself in Johannesburg, diving into Formula Vee racing with a Harrier. True to form, he tinkered and made it his own – a “Whitfield” creation. His journey in motorsport led him to compete in Formula Libre, where he later became Chairman.

Beyond racing, Jon became a familiar voice as Zwartkops’ regular commentator and added his expertise to Midvaal as well. His partnership with Sean Woodgate brought fans technically accurate, yet entertaining commentary.

In between races, Jon competed in Superhatch and endurance events, even sharing a car with his daughter Tarryn – a true highlight of his life!

Jon had time for everyone. He lived and breathed racing, with a creative mind always planning the next big thing. His absence, after falling ill, leaves a void in the motorsport community. He was a larger-than-life character who always conducted himself with dignity.

On behalf of every petrolhead, South African motorsport, and sim racing community, thank you, Jon, for paving the way and leaving an unforgettable legacy. You will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, Jon Whitfield.
