National Championship Extreme Festival heads to Killarney

Cape Town is braced for another wild bout of South African National Championship motor racing when the 2024 Extreme Festival visits Killarney on Saturday 21 September. Featuring a refined selection of only South Africa’s seven finest racing categories, Cape fans are in for an epic day of racing.

Topping the bill, the fastest category of the day has attracted a bumper entry of exotic machinery. The Extreme Supercars driven by Dunlop sees competitors from all around South Africa coming to town to take on the best in the Cape. None less than Gauteng Lamborghini Huracán trio Stuart White, Jonathan du Toit and Xolile Letlaka, PE lad Silvio Scribante’s similar machine, and Vaal driver Arnold Neveling’s Audi R8 will be out to tackle local heroes Dane and Marcel Angel’s Ferraris and Paarl star Dawie Joubert’s Lotus Ferrari. Add Porsche men Charl Arangies and the returning Franco Scribante’s mad 911Turbo, and the rest and we have the recipe to thrill.

It’s all to do in the South African Touring Cars this weekend, if the rest want to prevent Robert Wolk’s BMW from clinching the title at Killarney. Home hero teammate Julian van der Watt will be keen on some better luck after rolling his Volkswagen Golf last time out. Toyota quartet Michael van Rooyen, rookie Anthony Pretorius, Saood Variawa and Nathi Msimanga are all race winners so far this season, so can never be discounted, while Andy Schofield will be out in another BMW. So Killarney is certainly set for some truly entertaining tin-top racing too.

Nobody is however in a comfortable South African SupaCup championship position. Keegan Campos holds a very narrow advantage over Johannesburg Volkswagen factory compatriot Jonathan Mogotsi, with his Cape home rookie Charl Visser a strong third. Another Cape kid, ready to thrill his Killarney faithful, is Tate Bishop. Their SupaPolos must now also deal with Gazoo Toyota SupaStarlets, with champion Bradley Liebenberg looking for a maiden win for the brand, ably backed by young gun Sa’aad Variawa.

Richards Bay oval track convert Jason Loosemore also has the chance to wrap the 2024 Astron Energy Polo Cup championship up at Killarney. With three heats scheduled, however, it could just as easily go the other way, so rest assured that Jason will be playing it safe. Jozi lads Ethan Coetzee and Mo Karodia will want to close Jason down, but home hero Nathan Victor may well be the one to watch in Cape Town this weekend, as he looks to bounce back from a luckless stretch. Rookie compatriot Kyle Visser would love nothing less than scoring a maiden Polo win at home, too. The Astron Masters, Wayne Masters, Derick Smalberger, John Kruger and the rest meanwhile offer a great second Polo Cup focal point.

The Investchem Formula 1600s arrive at Killarney with KC Ensor Smith in a tight fight with title rival Jagger Robertson. Local hero Jason Coetzee will be out to impress his Cape home crowd. But he also has Karabo Malemela, Siya Mankonkwana, Shrien Naidoo and Alex Vos right on his case. Saturday will be the final time Investchem Formula 1600 visits Killarney before the all new halo-equipped Volkswagen turbo litre-powered Investchem MSA4 takes over as SA’s premier wings and slicks single seater class in 2024.

Also on the Killarney Extreme Festival menu, will Clinton Seller continue with his SunBet ZX10 Masters motorcycle domination? Or can a top Cape rider topple him? Rest assured that all of Damion Purificati, Trevor Westman, David Enticott and Graeme van Breda, Hein McMahon and the rest will be out to stop the Red Baron. Toyota Gazoo Racing Cup GR 86 lad Dawie van der Merwe is a proven Killarney force. And a good bet for another double win, considering that he remains unbeaten this year. Niko Zafiris, Dylan Pragji and others will keep trying, while Sean Nurse comfortably tops the GR Corolla Media, and Devon Scott the Yaris Cups.

Unbeatable as a venue to enjoy the very best of National Championship motor racing, Killarney boasts many a great and accessible spectator vantage point in a true festival atmosphere. Discounted tickets are available online via webtickets.co.za, or at Pick n Pay at R110 per adult and R40 for under 16s and under 12s free. Or buy yours at the gate at R150 for adults and R50 for kids. See you at Killarney!
