Mogotsi in title battle with 5 points in it, 4 races to go

Volkswagen Motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi heads to Cape Town just five points off the South African National SupaCup championship with just four races left to run, the next two being at the Killarney International Raceway on Saturday 21 September. Teammate Charl Michael Visser sits third in the title chase and both he and Astron Energy Polo Cup Rookie brother and teammate Kyle are keen to impress on their home track this weekend.

“Jonathan has mounted a splendid fightback over the last few SupaCup rounds and he has whittled his deficit down to just five championship points,” Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport points out. “Jonathan won both races last time out and we scored a double victory as a team on our previous Killarney visit at the beginning of the season. The objective this weekend is more of the same. It’s also a home for the Visser brothers, Charl Michael and Kyle, so they’re charged up and the team is ready to race.”

“We have worked hard as a team to fightback and reduce that title deficit to just five points, so now the plan is to keep that momentum rolling,” Jonathan Mogotsi admits. “I won both races last time out at East London, and Charl Michael and I shared the wins last time we raced at Killarney, so the stars seem aligned, although that’s no guarantee of success. We know what we have to do and I have an awesome team behind me, so I’d say we are ready for this battle.”

SupaCup rookie Charl Michael Visser has won two races so far this year and sits third in the SupaCup title chase. “We are back at my home track and I really love racing at Killarney,” Charl Michael explains. “I won last time we raced here, but this time I may need to play the team game to help Jonathan gain maximum points in the championship chase. Let’s see how it goes, maybe there’s still a chance for another win.” Charl Michael earned his Volkswagen Motorsport seat by winning the 2024 Volkswagen Polo Cup.

Younger brother and Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie Kyle Visser likewise earned his factory seat by winning the 2023 Volkswagen Rookie Cup. He’s enjoyed a strong first season so far as the runaway leader among the first year Polo Cup drivers. “I am excited to race at my home track in front of all our fans, friends and family, so this would be the perfect opportunity for a breakthrough result,” Kyle explains. “I’ve had a few third places this year, so to climb a step or two up that podium would be the best way to thank my incredible Volkswagen Motorsport team.”

“Killarney has been good to us in the past and Cape Town always makes for an incredible race weekend,” Mike Rowe concludes. “Volkswagen Motorsport however has a clear task at hand and we’re ready to put our best foot forward. Bring it on!”
