The Scottair Swartberg 200, a highly anticipated event in the racing calendar, took place on July 20, 2024, at the Jurassic Park Polo Club, marking the third round of the 2024 KZN Regional Off-Road Car Championship.
The race featured a 45km loop, which competitors completed four times. This event is renowned for its technical complexity, featuring diverse terrain that tests the skills of drivers. Participants navigated through a mix of rough and slow sections, as well as smooth and fast stretches, making for a challenging and exhilarating experience.
The course took drivers through a variety of landscapes, including open rolling burnt grass hills, rocky jeep trails with steep inclines and descents, fast rally-like forest sections, and slippery, stony roads. The narrow valley roads demanded full concentration from the drivers, with no flat-out sections to offer respite. Tire management was crucial due to the rocky terrain, and overshooting corners could lead to significant time losses. The course also offered breathtaking views reminiscent of Lesotho, with some rough passes adding to the challenge.
Success in this event required a well-balanced, all-round vehicle capable of handling the unexpected conditions encountered on the first loop. Both novice and seasoned competitors thoroughly enjoyed the race, finding the experience rewarding and exhilarating.
Following the prize-giving ceremony, which was a festive affair, a well-attended braai was hosted by the owners of the Polo Club at their home, where most competitors were accommodated.
It was a fantastic weekend of racing in the mountains, and we encourage all competitors to consider participating in this thrilling event in the future.
