Returning for his first national this season and only his third event, DD2 Masters driver Carlo Gil claimed a podium heat finish on his way to a fifth overall result as the penultimate South African Rotax MAX Challenge round concluded at his home circuit of Formula-K Raceway this weekend.
After almost qualifying in the dark on Friday night, with the schedule running late, conditions were also quite chilly, which affected track conditions. Saturday morning, however, brought with it a new day and the chance of some good results.
In the opening heat, Carlo, backed by Blu Gil and Aumic Engineering, finished just off the podium, placing fourth behind some seasoned campaigners. Not to be intimidated by his lack of experience compared to others, the Ricciardo kart driver showed his adaptability and growth in Heat 2, securing a podium finish when he crossed the finish line in third with a calm and calculated drive. The final heat would be more challenging, with Carlo losing a position to take the chequered flag in fifth to cap off an admirable fifth overall.
“Returning to the national stage after only two regional events as preparation has been challenging. The pace is frenetic, with no quarter given. We’ll keep working hard in order to improve and might even consider a new chassis, as this one is ageing a bit. Generally speaking, it was good to be back,” said Carlo.
The stage is set for the grand finale of the SARMC Kart Championships, eagerly awaited on 30-31 August at Zwartkops Kart Raceway in Pretoria.
