It was a triumphant weekend for Micro MAX rookie Luhan de Wet, who, despite not winning all three heats, managed to dominate over a fiercely competitive South African Rotax MAX Challenge field at Formula-K Raceway in Benoni.
From his first national pole position, the Xtreme Racing driver secured his maiden victory at the national level, immediately throwing the cat amongst the more favoured pigeons. To cement his intent further, the former National Cadet Champion took a flag-to-flag victory to secure a maiden national win.
For Heat 2, Luhan started from sixth on the grid. He displayed unwavering determination, putting in a stellar performance and making his way through the field to finish as the runner-up, less than a tenth behind the winner. Despite a gritty drive in Heat 2, the Centurion resident would deliver another classy performance in the final heat, racing to victory from a third-row start to secure another victory and the overall win on the day. The final heat also saw Luhan claim the quickest lap of the day.
“This has to be my best performance since I started karting,” said Luhan. “The kart was just so strong where it needed to be. While I didn’t always record the fastest lap, I was quick where it mattered, making all the difference. I can’t thank the team enough. After two disappointing national rounds, this is just what we needed.”
The final round of the SARMC Kart Championships is scheduled for 30-31 August at Zwartkops Kart Raceway in Pretoria.
