Dawie van Merwe continued his strong form and dominance in the Gazoo Racing SA Cup, winning both Gazoo Racing 86 races at Aldo Scribante Raceway on Saturday, 29 June, to extend his points lead further in the championship. Forming part of the National Extreme Festival, the Gazoo Racing SA Cup is one of several racing categories that compete at circuits around the country, making up the premier national racing tour.
Behind the wheel of the Toyota 86, the seasoned driver with VW Challenge and Polo Cup experience once again demonstrated his prowess at Round 4. Another top qualifying performance secured his fourth consecutive pole position, setting the stage for an exciting race. As the lights went out, Dawie surged ahead, leading a pack of young, eager drivers towards Turn-1.
In what is essentially a drag race, Dawie led out the precession of similar cars around the 2,4 km Eastern Cape circuit. With a little extra in hand regarding pace, the Mbombela resident took a lights-to-flag victory to add to his perfect winning streak this season and another fastest lap.
Race 2 was a similar affair, with Dawie again leading the pack at the start. Fending off an early challenge, the number 30 driver went on to claim another victory, extending his lead in the championship and edging that much closer to the prize of a factory drive in the South African Touring Cars SupaCup Championship in 2025.
“It’s been a phenomenal season thusfar where I’ve been able to be at the top of my game. There’s nothing more challenging than competing in a cup race with the cars being equal. It’s a test of one’s skills and tenacity, and I’ve been very blessed to be in this position. Thank you to Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa and everyone supporting me. It is much appreciated,” said Dawie.
Round 5 of the Gazoo Racing SA Cup heads to the Border Motorsport East London Grand Prix Circuit on 26-27 July.
