Adriaan Steyn, the reigning National and regional Bambino Champion showcased his tenacity by securing a commendable third place at Saturday’s (22 June) regional Rotax competition, marking the halfway point of the championship.
A rookie in this season’s Micro MAX class, Adriaan qualified in third for the morning’s opening race, making up the fourth round of the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championships. Able to make up a position at the start, the Greensky-backed Parolin driver slotted into second, fending off his challenges for the most part before dropping back to fourth as the laps ran out. However, nose-cone penalties to two drivers ahead saw Adriaan promoted to second to claim his best finish on the day.
Adriaan lost a position after starting third for Heat 2 but fought back bravely to reclaim it before moving into second on the penultimate lap. Under pressure over the last kilometre of the race, he was caught and passed to finish third. The final heat saw Adriaan again engaged in a battle for the podium placings, and he went on to finish third.
“While I would have liked to finish higher on the podium, it was a very competitive weekend, and we did our best. We didn’t quite have the pace, and it sometimes went differently than planned. But racing is very unpredictable, and you have to adapt. We have a little work ahead of us before the national, where we hope to be challenging for the win,” said Adriaan.
With the penultimate round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge Kart Championships just around the corner, Adriaan is gearing up for an exciting return to the Formula-K Raceway, Benoni, on 5-6 July.
