KC Ensor-Smith left the Zwartkops Raceway this past weekend with a runner-up trophy following another strong performance in this season’s Investchem Formula 1600 Championship.
Heading to Round 3 of the premier single-seater championship, KC knew he needed to claw back some of his championship rival Jagger Robertson’s advantage in the standings. Following a solid day out on Friday, the Witbank teenager was consistently amongst the top times set during practice and headed to Saturday morning’s qualifying brimming with confidence. Ultimately, a mere 0.059 seconds separated the two rivals, with Jagger edging out KC for the pole.
The races were a thrilling spectacle, with KC Ensor-Smith and Jagger Robertson locked in a fierce battle around the challenging Pretoria circuit. Despite setting the fastest lap in each race, KC had to settle for second place, further widening the gap between him and his rival in the championship. However, the points earned for the fastest lap could potentially play a pivotal role in the championship, with KC having recorded the quickest lap in each of the three rounds so far.
Reflecting on the weekend, KC expressed his satisfaction, saying, “It was another strong performance for us. The car has been consistently quick this season, allowing us to maintain fast laps during the race. While overtaking is a challenge in such closely matched races, we understand the importance of securing the pole position. I’m truly grateful to my team and sponsors for their unwavering support.”
Round 4 of the championship resumes on 28-29 Jun at the Aldo Scribante Racetrack in Gqeberha.
