Round 3 of the Mobil 1 V8 Supercars concluded at Red Star Raceway this afternoon with defending champion Julian Fameliaris recording a brace of wins as the popular “Rolling Thunder” broke the silence of a warm Autumn Mpumalanga day.
Fameliaris took his first pole position of the season in the Qualifying Session this morning, edging out championship rivals Thomas Reib and Warren Lombard. The opening race saw the Lube-Net Chevrolet Corvette driver romp off to an easy 13-second victory after gradually opening up a margin over the squabbling duo of Reib and Lombard. At the same time, Fameliaris also recorded the fastest lap of the day, setting a time of 1 minute 54.163 seconds.
In the reverse grid second race, Fameliaris started third. Following the usual rolling start, Fameliaris slotted into position and was soon competing for second. Making the pass, he and Reib set off for their own battle. While Fameliaris bided his time, Reib erred, and Fameliaris pounced, taking the lead and eventually winning to leave Red Star Raceway as the outright championship leader.
“A great day out for me and the team. There was quite a bit of preparation that went into the car and I must thank Franco Di Matteo and Gavin Wilking Racing. As we celebrate 50 years of Mobil 1 lubricants I can’t think of a better way to showcase this incredible brand,” said Fameliaris.
The championship action will resume with Round 4 on 7-8 June at Zwartkops Raceway. This promises to be a thrilling showdown as the drivers gear up to challenge Fameliaris’ and make their mark in the championship race.
