Nicole van Aswegen, a South African motorcycle racer, has been selected to race in the inaugural FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship, which will start in June 2024.
Van Aswegen, who goes by the nickname “Nix21”, is one of the most accomplished female riders in South Africa, having won the South African Female 600cc Championship in 2010 and becoming the first ever woman to compete in a National Superbike Race in South Africa.
The FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship is a new project announced by the FIM and Dorna Sports in April 2023, with the aim of creating a platform for female riders to showcase their talent and pursue a professional career in motorcycle racing. The championship will consist of six rounds, primarily running alongside the World Superbike Championship, and will feature equal machinery from Yamaha.
Van Aswegen expressed her excitement and gratitude for being chosen to participate in this historic event. “I’m thrilled and honored to be part of the first FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship. This is a dream come true for me and for many other women who love racing. I want to thank my sponsors, my team, and my family for their support and encouragement. I can’t wait to get on the track and represent South Africa in this amazing competition.”
Van Aswegen will join a diverse and talented grid of female riders from around the world, who will compete for the title of the first FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Champion. The championship will kick off at the Emilia Romagna Round at Misano World Circuit on June 14-16, 2024.
Before Van Aswegen can make it to Italy, however, she will need to secure funding to cover travel, accommodation and entry costs. The dynamic racer is putting out a call for potential partners, wishing to get their brand out to an International audience.
