Among the numerous racing events that take place across the country, ROK Cup South Africa holds a special place due to its unique format and the sheer thrill it offers. The first ever FIA African Karting Cup Qualifier for South Africa took place on 23 September 2023 at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit.
The Inaugural Event
This inaugural event saw a healthy number of OK-J and OK-N drivers all wanting to be a part of it, putting their hearts into it, and charging on. The anticipation was palpable as it was a one-heat qualifier and the nerves were felt by all. As the African sun was setting, these drivers were putting on their helmets, climbing into their karts, and getting their minds focused. Only the top two drivers per category would earn a seat to participate in the African Karting Cup race taking place in early 2024.
The Victors
The top two finishers emerged in OK-J: Mahlori Mabunda and Ntiyiso Mabunda, and in OK-N: Muhammad Wally and Niko Zafiris. These talented drivers will now race against other African Countries namely Angola, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. A big congratulations to all who competed in the shootout Mabunda M, Mabunda N, Dias, Boshoff, Naidoo, Moerat, Marshall, Hill, Scrimgeour, Cupido, Wally, Zafiris, Pringle, and Bezuidenhout.
The Reward
The first-placed competitor in the OKJ class age permitting will automatically be drawn to compete at the 2025 OK-N African Karting Cup. The top three competitors in the OK-N class will earn a ticket to compete at the 2024 OK-N FIA Karting World Cup, or equivalent at the discretion of the organiser. This is a golden opportunity for these racers to showcase their talent at an international level.
The African Karting Cup
The African Karting Cup will be held over three days, with the first one being an orientation day and the remaining days will be filled with practice, qualifying heats, and the main race. This is an arrive-and-drive format race, where all 20 competitors per class OK-J and OK-N will have the same chassis brand and pool engines both by random draw. The track layout will be an undriven layout by these competitors, making it fair for all competing.
