Round 2 of the MSA Northern Regions Rotax Karting Championship took place at Formula-K Kart Circuit yesterday where Kayde Cornofsky walked away somewhat unscathed from a Heat 2 incident to complete the round and finish ninth overall.
Cornofsky qualified in sixth on Saturday morning and, after, some impressive driving, took the final podium position in a race that saw him run as high as second before dropping down the order to fight his way back up to third. Unfortunately, the Johannesburg driver could not replicate his heat 1 result after an accident that saw him flung from his kart. While his CRG kart suffered substantial damage leaving him unable to continue, Cornofsky suffered some bruising to his arm but was cleared to continue.
He continued, albeit in a chassis that was not on race pace. Despite starting down the order, he worked his way up the order to finish sixth and claim ninth overall. As a precaution, Cornofsky had his arm X-rayed and was given a clean bill of health.
“After a strong podium finish in Heat 1, I was confident of another good result in Heat 2. As I tried to make a pass in Turn 2, we touched, sending me into the tyres and eventually out of the kart. The arm was a little sore, but I insisted on racing the final heat, so the team scrambled to get my kart in running order. Big shout out to them for the hard work, we’ll likely take a more in-depth look at the damage to determine whether we need to replace the chassis ahead of the national,” said Cornofsky.
Cornofsky extends his thanks to Canario Cornofsky Attorneys, Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant, Allegiance Properties, Smith Garage and the Xtreme Racing Team. Cornofsky will prepare for the opening round of the MSA National Karting Championship at Celso Scribante Kart Circuit, Gqerberha, where he’ll be back in his Kid ROK kart.
