During the final round of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup Championship, ANGRi Racing’s Tate Bishop finished third overall. The championship which forms part of the National Extreme Festival Tour brought a close to the national season at Zwartkops Raceway.
In the opening race, Bishop made a steady start from the second row of the grid (fourth position) despite being on the less-favoured inside grid position as he explains: “I made a decent start and held my line and position through one (Turn 1) only to be left hanging on the outside as you brake for two (Turn 2). From there, it was the usual train of cars. Suddenly, carnage ahead as GTC cars are coming back onto the circuit. Once we cleared four (Turn4) I tried to reel in Arnold (Neveling). I think I gained on him over the next lap or two before we had a recovering GTC car ruin our battle. This slowed us all up and saw me drop to fifth. I immediately attacked Danie (van Niekerk) to reclaim the place. From there, it was about managing the engine temps and bringing the car home.” Bishop crossed the finish line in fourth.
Race 2 would see the Sparco brand ambassador start in third and finish third. It was, however, not plain sailing for the Capetonian, who dropped to fifth at the start. Sitting behind Van Niekerk, Bishop made an impressive pass into Turn 6 to move up into fourth before catching and passing Neveling to take the chequered flag and record his third podium finish of the season.
Bishop extends his thanks to ANGRi Racing, Lee Thompson from Lee Thompson Racing and all those who have supported him throughout his 2023 season. Bishop ends his debut season as the top-placed rookie in the championship.
