New class salutes SATCAR, Group N roots at Zwartkops
Historic Racing South Africa’s exciting Classic Youngtimer class will certainly add to the heritage of Zwartkops Raceway’s Braai Day 23 September Historic Tour meeting. Loosely based on the epic SATCAR and Group N era of 1990s South African motorsport, the fast-growing new class is an excellent addition to a Heritage Day meeting that will call back several aspects of the local sport’s past.
Catering for four-door front-wheel drive production saloon cars manufactured in South Africa from 1990 to 1997, HRSA Classic Youngtimers is designed to be affordable. Like it was back in the days of Group N, little or no modifications are permitted to keep costs down and ensure close and exciting racing.
Racing behind the Ben Morgenrood HRSA Historic Sprint category, the Classic Youngtimers are identified by their bright green windscreen decals. Stalwarts of the series so far, racing driver, himself a legend of erstwhile Group N Racing Mike O’Sullivan, and Rob Clark will be out in a pair of Honda Ballades.
O’Sullivan’s silver Mosport series prototype, and Clark’s colourful Containerforce car will be challenged by Tiaan Smith’s BP tribute Nissan Sentra and Jonathan Visser’s ex-Jannie Van Rooyen VW Jetta. Wimpie Van Zyl makes a welcome return in another Sentra, while series founder Stuart McClarty is racing to have his new Mazda Etude ready for the weekend.
Other cars nearing completion include an Alfa Romeo 155, and another Nissan Sentra and Honda Ballade. To find out more about this booming fledgeling category, visit the HRSA Classic Youngtimers in the Zwartkops pits on Saturday or visit the ‘HRSA Classic Youngtimer Touring Cars 1990-1997’ group on Facebook.
